I Made a Little Farm in ProBuilder

I can't describe how amazing it feels to make something in ProBuilder again. Things get really busy with my work on FUSER, so I don't always have time for other projects. That said, I had been really itching to get back into a game engine, specifically do something to test my level design-related skills. And with all the work I've done with ProBuilder in the past, it felt like the right time to dive back in.

I went into this design without really having a plan; just wanting to make a block-out of a small environment that a player could explore. It started out with me wanting to try making a basic tree, so I thought I would make a little forest. From there, I just wanted to make a bunch of other small things, and it eventually evolved into making a small farm.

Favorite Parts

I really liked how the pond and the dock came out. I was wondering what the best approach would be for making a the pond, such as cutting a hole into the face, and building it that way. Instead, I decided to create multiple connections between edges, and then reorienting the vertices to create the shape that I wanted. I think it kept all of the faces really clean, and I avoided any faces with more than 4 sides. As for the dock, I think it was a good way to reteach me about snapping to vertices. Unlike most of the parts of this design, I used multiple ProBuilder shapes, for the dock; one for the body, and individual planks. Snapping pivot points to vertices allowed me to get a really clean design for the dock, and thought it probably isn't perfect, I think it came out well.

I also enjoyed making the well, as I used a lot of extrusion of faces to make different parts and connect the base of the well with the top, while also making roof. If I were to make any additions to the well, I think I would want to add a bucket in the center.

This was also the first object that I applied colors to while making the block-out. Obviously, the shapes are still using the default textures, but I was really happy to be able to divide up those colors based on my face selections. Giving that splash of color I think really improved the design.

Improvements

I think if I were to redo anything, I would want to make the house look a little less basic. I was happy that I was able to hollow it out, as well as make a simple roof. That being said, it feels a bit like it was there to populate space in the block-out, and was pretty simple.

There was also the paths that I made on the ground. Unlike what I did with the pond, this was my first time using the polygon shape tool, which is essentially click to make a new vertex, and build your shape from there. Since this was my first time using it, I bet there were probably a few tricks that I haven't picked up on yet to make the path look a little cleaner.

I'm gonna cut this blog post here for now, but I'm hoping to start another ProBuilder project soon, so stay tuned for that!
