TAKING ROCK BAND TO THE NEXT LEVEL!

In 2016, a paid expansion was released for Rock Band 4 called Rock Band Rivals. This expansion introduced 2 new game modes, one of which was Rivals mode. In Rivals mode, up to ten players can join an online crew and compete in weekly challenges as part of a season, and work towards getting high scores on the global leaderboards and earning new in-game rewards. Players will also gain Rival Points to help their crew rank up each season and fight against other crews for the top spot of that season.

MY CONTRIBUTIONS

I was brought into Rock Band Rivals for the skills I developed in content design and live-support for FUSER. In terms of the work I did, I had a few primary focuses:

  • Concepting themes for Rivals challenge seasons.

  • Selecting playlist and spotlight songs for each season's weekly challenges.

  • Managing challenges, seasons, and rewards via administrator tools.

  • Running checks each week to make sure newly released DLC and challenges are appearing and functioning in game as expected.

  • Investigating bugs reported by customer support, and helping to resolve them.

POST-MORTEM

I’ve taken away some great knowledge about how to construct content for a live-support audience. Rock Band Rivals has a very substantial library of songs that is still growing at the time of me writing this, and is made up of different songs from as many music genres as you could imagine. Knowing this, I feel like I’ve had to really expand my music knowledge and be able to construct challenges not just based on how the audience plays the game, but based on what music the audience wants to play. Sometimes, it’ll be “make a punk-centric challenge” or “highlight songs with a bunch of guitar solos”, and making sure I understand the songs that players want to play from those genres is so important when I’m selecting songs.

From a technical standpoint, I think working on Rock Band Rivals has allowed me to expand my knowledge of working with spreadsheets. While putting together challenges, you work with spreadsheets on a fairly regular basis, and the experience has allowed me to learn more about organizing information and the technical features for how to organize that info.
